Blackout Automated Fighter Drone

Here's the Photoshop overlay of the Maquette Building 02 post. I've made the design more angular and added some photo elements here and there, but again the original photography of the Maquette was very helpful in setting up the lighting etc.

Rhino Unit - Custom Brush Abstractions 01

I was messing around with some custom brushes I found (Steambot Structural Brushes) and started seeing shapes and designs emerge after putting down a couple of strokes. Here's the first one I've sort of rendered - it's still a bit abstract but I could easily use this information to draw a 3/4 view with legs or however else it moves.

1/60 PG RX 78-2 WIP1

Colour scheme done for this, plus some shots of the panel lining I did a while ago. I've moved on to paint but I need to take some progress shots.

Maquette Building 02

I've got a lot of projects on the go at the moment, my Garbaldy, my PG RX 78-2 for the Group Build over at Mecha Lounge (updates soon) and my nearly completed Kampfer (updates imminent!), but I've still managed to squeeze in a couple of hours to play around with this Blackout Transformer that I bought in a job lot after the last maquette post I did.

Here's what I came up with... The progress photos are a bit rough because they're just from my iPhone. The last few photos are the final shoot ones I'm going to choose from for the paintover in Photoshop. I'm thinking maybe a front view and a back view. I really want to try and get this into an environment too, I'm learning all about reflections from Scott Robertson's Schoolism class, which is really helping my rendering. I'd highly recommend if you have the money!

1/100 MG Kampfer [Knight] WIP2

Nearly finished! The whole thing is painted and put together except for the weapon and shield. I'm not showing the whole thing yet, but here's some progress photos that I managed to take after decals and whilst doing the final construction.

If You Go Down To The Woods Today...

Hannah and I went with my stepdad to this bit of woodland that he manages one afternoon last month - here's a few interesting photos I took. I would have taken more photos, there's a lot of lovely stuff in the woods, but I was too busy enjoying myself! The skull is a deer skull I believe, very interesting stuff. Hannah took the photo of the spider web, which I really like.

1/100 MG Kampfer [Knight] WIP1

I've been working on this for quite a while and I just want to get it finished! It was initially for the MechaLounge Group Build but I didn't have time to finish it due to work commitments. I've made quite a lot of progress over the past few days, but here's the photos I have of it from start to its current state.

I've started using my iPhone4S to take WIP photos - I'll always use my SLR for the final shoot, but for WIPs the iPhone is incredible. I can't believe the quality of the pictures! It makes life so much easier in terms of recording progress. Provided there's good light, that is.

Dark Vengeance 01 - Deathwing Terminators

This is the start of the 'something special' I've been working on - it's back on the Warhammer!

I bought the Dark Vengeance starter set a while ago because 1) I just had a really strong urge to play some Warhammer, something which I cannot explain as I'm very bad at it. And 2) Because there's some really cool models in this set, something that usually lacks in the Games Workshop starter games from what I can remember.

Sideswipe Paint Over

So it's taken a bit of time but I think I've finally gotten somewhere with this Maquette paintover thing I started a while ago. It was a lot harder than I expected it to be, partly because I had a shallow depth of focus in the image so a lot of the shapes where blurred out. I also had to add things like the belly pan to make the shape work because as I worked into the image I realised that the design wasn't working in its original form.

The front has completely changed, because those 4 headlamp things looked too much like eyes and I couldn't get away from that once I saw it! I've tried to unify the whole thing and make it look like a whole vehicle and not a mish-mash of parts by adding panels and connecting some of the original parts. I'll try and do a WIP soon, mainly because it was an interesting process for me and one I learned a lot from. I'll also be posting up my next one of these, which started life as a fairly detailed Blackout helicopter. Stay tuned!

Sorry for the long delay between posts, a lot has happened in the last 6 weeks! I have registered as a Limited Company, so I'm all proper and professional now. Will post a link to my website when it's all up and running.

I also managed to get a job teaching Photoshop and 3D Studio Max on a game design course at a college here in Brighton, so hopefully I'll be able to do that one day a week along side running the company. As well as all that we've been at Download Festival for 5 days, rocking out to some sweet metal music, so I haven't really had the chance to update with anything creative!

For now, here's some photos I took with my Macro lens when we went to watch the battle re-enactments on May bank holiday weekend at Arundel Castle. Enjoy!

Shoreham Harbour

Hannah and I walked up from Southwick, just past Shoreham-By-Sea, to Hove along the coast and took some photos on the way. I find all this dockyard type industrial stuff really interesting and I'm really pleased with some of these photos. It's things like this that remind me why I love living by the sea!

1/100 MG Kampfer [Knight]

So I am working on this amongst all the other stuff I'm doing at the moment! I'd say it's about 50% built, and the paint job will be pretty straight forward. Though I am gonna have a go at the zig zag camo as I think it really suits the curves of the kit. I need to think of a way to do it so that it all matches up, though. I will be entering this in to Mecha Lounge's CHAOS Group Build if it's done in time!

I saw this Kampfer with a red shoulder a while ago, and I think it worked really well so I'm going to try and do something like that, but make it into what I'm calling a 'chapter badge' like on Space Marines. I'm sure they're called something like 'house colours' on Knights, but it's basically the markings that identify the knights allegiance.

Also, one more thing to note - the 'Knight' theme basically came about when I lost the Kampfer's weapons (all of them) when I moved house (facepalm!) so I had to build a whole new set of weapons. And I had just started playing Dark Souls at the time and I really like the Black Knights with the Halberds....... Stay tuned!

1/60 PG Strike Freedom [Icarus Variant] WIP2

I do have a lot to post other than this Strike Freedom, but because I have about 5 things on the go at the moment, I'm not really keeping up to date with photographs for most of it!

So I've done quite a bit on this model, and plan to do quite a bit more. If you remember from the last post, I had modified the wings to make them sharper and lighter and less rubbish in my opinion. Those horrible dragoons didn't look very nice, kept springing out all over the place with that rather unnecessary spring loaded mechanism that bandai raved about at the time of its release, and the thing just didn't stand up properly. I was only going to slightly modify the whole kit, that is until I received my PG Strike Rouge from HLJ.com.

1/60 PG Strike Freedom [Icarus Variant] WIP1

Oh look, it's a Perfect Grade Strike Freedom that stands up on its own without that horrible base it comes with!

1/100 Garbaldy [Juggernaut] WIP1

I'm a bit daunted by the warping I need to fix on my Zaku so I stopped that for a bit. I'm supposed to be panel lining my Kampfer but I can't bring myself to do that yet, So I started my Garbaldy.

Strange Objects In The Distance

I'm trying to get a bit of landscape practice in but I can't get any inspiration. This is just messing around with some custom brushes and a colour dodge layer and took about 20 mins. I think there's something in this technique but I do need to do like a hundred of these to try and get better at composition and lighting etc. I'll just put this up here as a reminder to do just that, rather than just remaining forgotten on my hard drive.

Maquette Building 01

So this is a pretty interesting thing I discovered which generates some nice shapes and ideas quickly.

I had this transformer lying around that I got for Christmas a few years ago (yes, I'm 26 years old...), it was the Sideswipe Human Alliance with Sgt. Epps to be exact. I think it was a bit of a joke present, but I liked it! It's been sitting on my desk in car form for a while because it's a bit of a pain to transform. For some reason I started playing around with it the other night and noticed it had some pretty nice parts and interesting joints.

1/100 MG Strike Rouge Ver. Gav

I started this kit way back in 2011 before I started my Mecha 2012 entry  - so about a year and a half ago! Apparently I didn't bother sanding parts before that point because on my return to working on this kit the amount of imperfections, nicks, bumps and downright untidy parts I found was ridiculous. I did my best to clean it up but there are some parts of this kit I'm not really proud of.

Also, because I've had this one in progress for so long I think I may have rushed it a bit putting it together, and in some (luckily) unseen areas the paint has scratched off down to the plastic. Which is saying something about my poor sanding and I'm also going to blame the primer!

Alpe d'Huez - It's All Downhill From Here

I went skiing in France last week. It was my first time and it was bloody frightening at points, but I think I got the hang of it. I took the opportunity to take in some of the landscape and put my crummy 18-55mm kit lens to work. On that note I'll be buying a nice Pentax 35mm Macro Limited Lens soon, which is apparently a very nice bit of kit.

2012 - In Review/ 2013 - The Plan

2012 was a rubbish year - apart from getting married and winning Mecha 2012! I'm pleased with winning the competition but it consumed 7 months of the year so there really wasn't a lot of time to do anything else. With the false starts in my personal life on accommodation and employment (both of which seem to have sorted themselves out now, thankfully) I didn't make as much progress as I'd have liked.

1/60 G-System Zaku II: WIP 1

So I made a bit of a start on my Zaku.

It was a bit daunting at first but once I got into the swing of it it's actually really fun working out where to drill the holes and the best places to pin bits together. Trimming down all the parts and cleaning them up is a bit long winded but is very satisfying.
